Ritual Hair Studio gets its name from a simple idea: personal grooming is a ritual that makes us look and feel like our most authentic selves.

For decades, the hair care industry has been too rigid, with strict divisions around gender and hair texture. Ritual brings it all together: the classic techniques of barbershops, like razor cuts and hot towel shaves; and the finesse, customer service, and high end products of salons.

So, why limit yourself? Let’s perfect your grooming ritual together.

STUDIO POLICIES

We understand certain circumstances happen, as part of life, and we aim to be accommodating and flexible. However, we value our time and energy, and thus need to have a policy for cancellations. To ensure the best possible services for all clients, we request that in the event you need to cancel or reschedule, you provide at least 24 hours notice. Cancellations made within 24 hours, as well as arriving later than 10 minutes after the booked service are counted as a no-show and all no-shows require 100% payment for requested services before booking any new service. Two no-shows in a year will result in requiring a card on file to charge in the event a client does not show. Three no-shows in a year will result in no longer being allowed to book services.

Staff is allowed to use their discretion, and will consider reasons for cancellations as to how to handle said cancellation.

We do not tolerate any harassment, bullying, or bigotry in the studio, towards us, other clients, or people passing by the shop. This is a safe, welcoming environment for all, regardless of gender, ethnicity, ability, and appearance. But tolerance is a social contract, not a paradox. If you are kind, you will receive kindness in return. If you are rude, bigoted, or just unfun to work with, we hold the right to refuse service, as this is a private business. We are open to everyone, but we are not for everyone. If this is an unreasonable expectation for you, there are many other shops that would be willing to accommodate you.

FAQ

Do you accept walk-ins?

We are open to walk-ins, but often cannot accommodate due to already being booked. We recommend calling the day of to ask about any openings, or adding yourself to the wait list if booking an appointment ahead of time does not work for your schedule.

Do you have parking?

There is ample street parking all around the studio. There are a few spaces directly in front of the studio on Forest Ave., as well as more spots on the next block over, as well as down the side streets of Clifton. The only parking that is not available to clients is the small lot behind the building. Those spaces belong to the tenants of the house next door, and towing will be enforced.

What payment types do you accept?

Pretty much everything. Cash of course, but also all major credit and debit cards, and sometimes venmo in a pinch. We do not accept other money transfer apps for our tax purposes. We also do not accept checks as we find them annoying to deal with.

Do you cut men’s/women’s/queer/trans peoples hair?

Yes, we will cut anyone’s hair regardless of gender expression. We may ask questions about how you like to express your gender through your hair as to better understand your needs, but we will never turn away a client for their gender, or any other reason other than rudeness.

Do you cut x ethnicity hair/curly hair?

Yes, we are well trained and experienced in all hair textures, and have clients who range in curl textures as well as ethnic backgrounds. We pride ourselves on being well educated on the entire hair spectrum. As stated above, we never turn away a client for any reason other than rudeness.

Do you cut children’s hair?

Yes, but we have a few guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort. The child must be able to sit in the chair on their own. We do provide a booster seat, but do not allow children to sit in their parents’ laps. We also do not force children into haircuts. If they are upset, we end the service immediately and will rebook for a later date. Our goal with children is not a perfect haircut, but a good experience, and forcing children into haircuts they do not want is antithetical to those goals. We are focused on good experiences for their own comfort, as well as our own, not just for the day, but to teach children how to get a haircut as it is something they will likely do for the next several decades, if not their entire lives. So we want to help them learn how to sit in the chair, how to talk to hair professionals and ask questions, how to advocate for themselves, how to groom their hair, and basically anything they need to know about their hair and the environment we offer.

I would prefer a private cut, is that something that can be arranged?

Yes, we offer private appointments for people with sensory processing disorders, medical concerns, or really for anyone who asks. There is nothing special about these appointments, other than only the stylist you’re booked with is alone. Dakota offers these appointments on Mondays and Tuesdays, Rowan offers them on Saturdays. There may be other random times one of them is alone in the studio, due to changes in work schedule. Clients are free to contact us to ask about other times available if those days do not work for them.

I have a lot of allergies to products found in hair care products, or detergent. Can this be accommodated?

Yes. We use Tide detergent, and Verb, Uppercut, R+Co, Pulp Riot, and Danger Jones hair products. We will allow clients to bring their own towels if they have a detergent allergy. Clients can also bring their own hair products in case of allergies. We cannot completely remove all possible allergens, but we will do our best to use any provided, allergen free products.

I don’t know what service to book for a haircut, what should I select?

We separate out haircuts according to length. Dakota offers a “New Client” service that allots for extra time and would prefer new clients select that service. After the initial service, he will tell you what he would like you to book for. For Rowan, select the service of the hair you are walking in with. If you have hair around the shoulder but plan to get a clipper cut, select long haircut. If you are unsure, please reach out to us and ask.

Do you offer color/perms, and if so how do I book one?

Dakota offers chemical services, and requires a consult beforehand. We prefer the consult happens in the studio, so he can assess hair and scalp health prior to the service. If this cannot happen due to distance, a consult over the phone with photos of the hair will be necessary. The consult will involve an examination of the hair and scalp health, discussion of hair history, desired goals, maintenance requirements, the intended plan, time requirements, and total cost. After this, the service will be scheduled. Dakota prefers to handle it this way to ensure all parties understand everything they need to, and there are no disappointments on either end. We use R+Co permanent and demi permanent color, and Pulp Riot and Danger Jones for all fantasy vivids.
